We are addicted to selfies: every day, millions of people photograph themselves and post their pictures on the web. But self portraits are not a new phenomenon. Dürer painted himself 1500 as the son of God. Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn painted 80 self-portraits in about 40 years. Robert Cornelius made the first photographic self-portrait in 1839. Alain Bieber, curator of the exhibition "Ego-Update: The Future of Digital Identity" at the NRW Forum in Düsseldorf, wrote: "The question of one's own identity is a fundamental question of humanity, which has always materialized in social, political and cultural forms of expression "and" from the 'I think, therefore I am' evolved an 'I photograph, I document, so I am'.

Who am I - really?

In times of the selfie and biometric pictures, what about the portrait, the one which reveals something of our personality?

Again and again there were and still are photographers who have enriched the genre of portrait photography with new aspects and, above all, enriched them with their very own visual language. What could be seen of me if I were portrayed by such photographers? Would their visual language dominate the portrait over its real task to reveal something about me?

To reflect on this, I made self-portraits inspired by the visual style of those portrait photographers, who fascinate me most. The resulting images are startling: Is that me? Do the images show facets of me for which I am blindfolded or are they artistic projections of the respective photographers?

Wer bin ich - tatsächlich?

Wo bleibt - neben Selfies und biometrischen Abbildungen - das Portrait, das etwas von unserem Wesenskern offenbart?

Immer wieder gab und gibt es Fotografen, die das Genre Portraitfotografie um neue Aspekte erweitert und vor allem mit ihrer ganz eigenen Bildsprache bereichert haben. Was würde sich von mir offenbaren, wenn ich von solchen Fotografen portraitiert würde? Würden sie unterschiedliche Facetten meiner Persönlichkeit darstellen, oder würde ihre Bildsprache über die Darstellung von mir dominieren?

Ich habe daher Selbstportraits, angelehnt an die Bildsprache der mich faszinierenden Portraitfotografen, für unterschiedliche Interpretation verwendet. Es sind verblüffend unterschiedliche Aufnahmen entstanden, die mich stutzen lassen: Bin ich das? Zeigen die Bilder Aspekte von mir, für die ich selber blind bin oder sind es künstlerische Projektionen der jeweiligen Fotografen?
